The Acekase!
Finding the perfect gift for someone is difficult. Looking for that item, after deciding upon it, can be a challenge. Discovering that the perfect gift you had planned does not exist is utterly disappointing. So you settle for the second best option, as I did, knowing you could have done better. If only your first choice actually existed.
As of now, my first choice does!
I felt honored to be invited to the retirement party of a founder of a large, multi-national company. As one of the few people invited that did not work for him, I knew that my gift for him had to be a reflection of not only my esteem and best wishes, but also as thanks for being included in such an important occasion.
So I went shopping.
Buying a gift takes some thought, if you want to do it right. My choice seemed relatively easy as I knew how much this person liked to sit around a table, talking to friends and employees, while playing a game of cribbage. I will simply buy him a pocket sized, engravable playing card case. This way no matter where he goes, he will always have a deck of cards at the ready. It also has to be of good quality and great visual appeal. Something for him to be proud of every time he shows it to someone. That would be a great reflection of the thoughtfulness in which it was given. I had the perfect gift idea, if only it existed! I looked everywhere. In stores, on the internet, and even antique shops. There was no such item. I found many larger playing card cases of varying quality, from merely o.k. to junk, and realized I was not going to find what I was looking for. I then purchased my second best idea, a wooden box with engravable plaque.
Two days after the retirement party, I wondered why such a timely, quality, personalizable item was not available anywhere. Almost two years later I know why. Every step of the way there have been many hurdles. From size, strength, and quality constraints, to functionality and finish complications, the ACEKASE was a one of a kind project. The use of quality materials (from the steel to the rare earth magnets) is indeed a rarity in today's disposable, mass produced world. Yet that is exactly what was needed for the ACEKASE. It had to be built strong and yet lightweight. The quality of feel and function is paramount to its design.
